Pyrography darkens the gourd shell with a heated metal point. It can produce calligraphic lines, stippling, and broad tone without removing as much material as carving.
Test every shell
Shell density varies within a single gourd. Test on a hidden area or scrap before committing to the main design. Lower heat and slower, even movement usually produce more controllable marks than pressing hard.
Work from light to dark
Transfer a simple outline, establish the lightest lines, then deepen selected areas. The shell cannot be unburned, so tonal build-up should be gradual. Avoid lingering in one spot, particularly on thin shoulders and necks.
Treat heat and fumes seriously
Place the hot tool in its proper stand, keep the cord away from the work, and clear flammable scraps from the bench. Use active ventilation and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions. Never burn a shell coated with an unknown finish, paint, preservative, or pesticide residue.
When the work is cool, remove loose carbon gently. Apply only a compatible finish and test it on an inconspicuous area first.
Design for the burn
Pyrography is strongest when line weight carries the image. Use broad tonal fields sparingly and let the unburned shell provide light. Keep a written record of point type, approximate temperature setting, and dwell time on the test area so a successful texture can be repeated.
